May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Although we preach that sun protection is important all year round, we want to take this opportunity to join the conversation about the dangers of skin cancer, the most common cancer in the world. Early detection and prevention is key. That’s why we encourage everyone to use SPF daily, reapply throughout the day when you can, and wear hats or protective clothing when in the sun for extended periods of time.
What is SPF? (Sun Protection Factor)
SPF measures how well a sunscreen protects against UVB rays, which cause sunburn and can lead to skin cancer. For example, SPF 30 means you can stay in the sun 30 times longer without burning, while SPF 50 allows for 50 times longer protection compared to unprotected skin. However, SPF only measures UVB protection, so opt for broad-spectrum sunscreens to guard against both UVA and UVB rays.
Understanding Sun Rays
UVA Rays: Cause Aging (think of “A” for Aging), leading to wrinkles and sunspots.
UVB Rays: Cause Burning (think of “B” for Burning), leading to sunburns and increasing skin cancer risk.
HEV Rays: High-Energy Visible light, or “blue light,” penetrates deeper into the skin, contributing to aging, hyperpigmentation, and potential skin damage. HEV rays are emitted by the sun and devices like computers and smartphones.
IRA Rays: Infrared-A rays penetrate deep into the skin, generating heat that can break down collagen and elastin, accelerating the aging process. These rays also cause oxidative stress, which can lead to long-term skin damage.
Chemical vs. Physical Sunscreens
Chemical Sunscreens:
Absorb UV rays like a sponge and convert them into heat, which is then released from the skin. They are lightweight, easy to rub in, but may cause irritation in sensitive skin.
Examples Include:
- ZO Daily Sheer SPF 50
- ZO Smart Tone SPF 50
Physical Sunscreens:
Contain minerals like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide that sit on the skin’s surface and reflect UV rays away. They offer immediate protection, are thicker, but less likely to irritate sensitive skin.
Examples Include:
- ZO Broad-Spectrum SPF 50
- ZO Sheer Fluid Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50
- ZO Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30
