What is the best time of year to start laser hair removal treatments?

“What is the best time of year to start laser hair removal treatments?” We get this question all the time! Many people have heard that they need to completely stay out of the sun during their laser hair removal treatments. I mean, we live in FLORIDA?? How can we possibly do that?!

It’s a common misconception that sun exposure has to be completely avoided. Each individual will be different and we absolutely recommend that you speak with your laser hair removal provider about your specific plan for avoiding sun exposure pre and post treatment.

Here are some general guidelines for sun exposure during your laser hair removal treatments:

Yes, you do need to be mindful of the sun before and after your laser hair removal treatment. We want the laser to “see” the color of your hair and not the color of your skin!

For most skin types we recommend avoiding sun exposure for 2-4 weeks before a treatment. This goes for tanning beds too! But you can have sun exposure on areas that you are NOT having laser hair removal on!

Sunless tanners are a little bit of a better option – because they generally do not last as long as a natural tan. But the laser will still want to “see” that color on on the skin too, so we usually recommend no sunless tanners 2 weeks before your upcoming treatment.

The great news is that you have 6-8 weeks between treatments, so you CAN get some sun during your treatments, but depending on your treatment plan and skin type you do need to be mindful of the sun 2-4 weeks before your appointment.

After a laser hair removal session, your skin may be warm to the touch or feel hot. You don’t want to put more heat on it for 24-48 hours after a laser hair removal treatment. We recommend no hot tubs, sunbathing or long, hot showers for 24-48 hours after a laser hair removal treatment. Again, check with your medical professional about your skin type and recommended after care plan.

We hope this gives you a general idea of the importance of watching sun exposure during your laser hair removal treatments. Again, we recommend that you speak with your laser hair removal provider about your specific plan for avoiding sun exposure pre and post treatment.

Now, what is the best time to start laser hair removal treatments?? TODAY, of course! 🙂
